Michael Larsen received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2007. He is currently serving as the Quantum Science Architect in Northrop Grumman’s Emerging Capabilities Development organization and directly supporting sensor development and application projects in the Future Position, Navigation, and Timing Systems group in Woodland Hills, California. Dr. Larsen’s focus is the application of atomic physics to the development of high performance, rugged, and compact sensors. His team’s projects include the development of inertial sensors, electromagnetic sensors, and clocks as well as their applications to DoD missions. Michael holds 26 patents in the field of atomic sensors, related technologies, and their applications. He received Engineering Achievement Awards in 2009 and 2018 from the San Fernando Valley Engineers’ Council as well as the President’s Leadership Award in 2013 from Northrop Grumman for his role as the principal investigator on the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Gyroscope and other quantum sensing research and development teams. Dr. Larsen is also serving on the steering committee for the Quantum Economic Development Consortium and supports the IEEE Inertial Symposium and APS DAMOP career panel.
