Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) utilise the inherent randomness of natural quantum processes to create their output, assured unique to each device. A method for providing authoritative certification of the unique randomness produced by QRNGs does not currently exist. In contrast to ‘traditional’ random number generators that do not exploit random quantum phenomena, detailed physical modelling and characterisation of a QRNG does not increase the predictability of its output. In the Innovate UK project AQuRand we are pursuing an approach involving such detailed QRNG modelling, paving the way for their certification through a UK-established assurance process, accelerating the commercial and industrial exploitation of QRNGs.

The project is led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK’s National Measurement Institute, includes six developers of QRNGs – Crypta Labs, KETS Quantum Security Ltd, Quantum Dice, Nu Quantum, Quantinuum, Toshiba Research Europe Ltd – and the Universities of York and Kent.
